To launch Assignment Inspiration for National Geographic and Mazda we traveled to Hiroshima, Japan to follow photographer David Guttenfelder. David used his experiences while on assignment in Japan to explore three distinct ideas.
First, David photographed the Spirit of Takumi. In Japan, a Takumi is a master craftsperson — an artisan who dedicates their life to mastering their skill. A Takumi puts their spirit and creative energy into their craft, infusing emotion through human touch. That creative energy is transferred to whomever experiences their work, whether it is a katana blade, calligraphy, or the body panel of a car.
David also explored the unique reflections that bring dormant surfaces to life and the question of what it means for humans to be uplifted through the passing of knowledge, shared discovery, or the simple act of helping another person.
